5 Resources To Learn Consumer Psychology

Learn what makes them BUY.

Happy Friday MoeMentum fam.

Yes yes..I’m on a roll and I will keep my best to keep it going.

Today I wanted to talk send something sweet and light, call it a weekend snack.

The idea came from binge-watching youtube and I thought..why not share with the boys some of the content I’ve been nerding out on lately.

The topic is: Consumer psychology.

When you take the time to master consumer psychology and get in your customer’s head, THAT’s when you’ll really start to see your brand take off.

Don’t take it from me but take it from my favorite resources these last few weeks.

These are my top 5 picks for learning consumer psychology. Im expecting all of you to send me yours!

#1 - Nudge Podcast by Phil Agnew

I’ve listened to a few of Phil’s episodes, and he knows his stuff.

The podcast is all about the psychology of marketing, and how small changes (nudges) can significantly impact consumer behavior.

Each episode features insights from experts in psychology, marketing, and behavioral science.

I enjoy it because it offers a good blend of theory and practical advice that you can actually use.

#2 - Marketing to Mindstates by Will Leach

As far as books go, this one is my top suggestion for anyone learning consumer psychology.

Will is the founder and CEO of TriggerPoint, a leading behavioral research and design consultancy. He has over 20 years of experience in the field and has worked with major brands to help them understand consumer psychology.

This book focuses on the concept of mindstates — temporary states of mind influenced by situational factors that affect how people perceive and respond to marketing messages. The book gives you a framework for spotting and using these mindstates to create better marketing campaigns.

#3 - Influence by Robert Cialdini

This is definitely one of the more popular picks on this list, but it’s just so good that I had to mention it.

While it’s not exactly about consumer psychology… the book focuses heavily on persuasion (which is the point of learning consumer psychology).

The book talks about the principles of persuasion and how they can be used to influence people's decisions and behaviors. Basically, there’s six key principles of influence:

  1. Reciprocity

  2. Commitment and Consistency

  3. Social Proof

  4. Authority

  5. Liking

  6. Scarcity

If you haven’t picked this one up yet, now is a perfect time to start.

#4 - The TEDTalk "Neuromarketing: The New Science of Consumer Decisions" by Terry Wu

Unlike these other resources, this is one you could start and finish in an afternoon.

Terry Wu is a genius. He talks about how neuroscience can be applied to understand and influence consumer behavior.

There’s a lot of different stuff in here, like the ways our brains process information and make decisions, often without our conscious awareness, the role of emotions in decision-making, the impact of visual stimuli on perception, and how different marketing messages can trigger specific brain responses.

This is the closest thing to black magic marketing I’ve ever seen.

Give this one a listen, but obviously be ethical about how you use this information.

#5 - The Marketing Examined Newsletter

I love this newsletter, and read just about every single one of their emails.

It provides insights into why certain marketing tactics work, backed by research and examples from various industries.

Each edition breaks down real-world marketing campaigns, explaining how psychological principles are applied to influence consumer behavior.

Definitely recommend subscribing to this one – it’s completely free.

So there it is!
